The Atlanta Falcons continue internal talks about potential GM replacements, while interim head coach Raheem Morris continues to impress property and the front office with his performance as a replacement for Dan Quinn.
Morris, who has deep ties to team president Rich McKay and is also well regarded by McKay’s confidant Tony Dungy, has the Falcons playing some good football since Quinn was sacked after another slow start. The Falcons are focused on opening up GM and sources have said they will begin interviewing some candidates next month. Several strong candidates are currently not employed by NFL teams and could therefore be contacted at any time for the vacant position. Former Texans general manager Rick Smith is among the candidates the Falcons would like to speak with, sources say, while Smith is likely to have plenty of options with some NFL executives planning more than eight openings.
Smith and McKay have ties that go back to their time on the NFL Competition Committee, Smith is highly regarded by the league office in New York and is someone Troy Vincent, the chief football operations manager of the league and someone at the forefront of the NFL push for more diversity, strongly supports. There is a feeling in the Atlanta organization that the team is not as far from the competition as some have suggested and that they do not embrace the idea of a wholesale rebuild of the list, believing that an attacking core puts the team in a position to win in 2021.
Additionally, Morris, 44, receives top accolades within the organization for his leadership work and for what he does on match day, and his resume with previous head coaching experience. and both sides of the ball have positioned him as a very viable candidate for the job, sources say. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who works with McKay on the competition committee, has long been a Morris champion, believing he deserved another chance as a head coach. Morris was one of the youngest head coaches in NFL history when he took over the Buccaneers in 2009, for three seasons.
Morris already has deep roots in communicating and training players on the Falcons’ offense and defense, being with Atlanta since 2015, and he had already returned to defensive play by calling Quinn this season as the defensive coordinator. Since Quinn was released in mid-October after a 0-5 start, the Falcons are 3-1 with their only loss being an odd 23-22 loss to the Lions when running back Todd Gurley fell. in the end zone rather than taking a knee as directed to one, which would have effectively won them the game.
Atlanta’s performance has improved in offense and defense, and that’s the rare case in the NFL where the interim head coach has a reasonable chance of retaining the job. If the Falcons do well in their final NFC South games (they face the Saints again and play two of their last three games against the Buccaneers), the strength of Morris’s candidacy will only increase. He already has a lot of supporters within the organization.
