Facebook launches long-awaited deployment of Messenger for Mac – 9to5Mac

Better late than never, right? Facebook is starting to ship its dedicated macOS Messenger app through the Mac App Store. Desktop messaging software was first spotted last April in a leaked ad that included a preview.

At the time, Facebook planned to ship Messenger for Mac by the end of 2019. The application is now online, at least in one region, three months after that deadline.

MacGeneration first spotted Facebook’s new Messenger app in the Mac App Store in France, but the app isn’t yet available in all regions. Following the list of French App Store in the United States confirms that the software is not yet intended to be marketed in America.

Facebook seems to have adopted the Slack approach, basing Messenger on Electron and not on Mac Catalyst, based on compatibility with macOS versions prior to Catalina.

In the meantime, Facebook offers Messenger via a web application on messenger.com. The native Mac application will bring its functionality to a more practical dedicated window when it is launched worldwide.

This suggests that Facebook is using the French market to test Messenger for Mac with users before expanding the deployment to all regions, including the United States. We will update when Messenger for Mac reaches the U.S. and other markets. See Messenger where you live? give us a cry.
