Brooke Henderson hit a 68 in the third round to lead the Evian championship by two strokes after day three.
The Canadian had four birdies to reach 17 under par heading into the final day at the Evian Resort Golf Club in France.
Ryu So-yeon, the 2011 US Open champion, is two strokes behind after recording three birdies in the last four holes.
“It wasn’t as good as the first two days, but I really stuck with it,” said Henderson, 24, who led by three shots on the night.
“I felt like the course was a bit tougher for me today. Obviously I’m in a great position going into Sunday which is always a lot of fun.
“Hopefully I find a good strategy together tonight, play aggressively and have a good day tomorrow.”
Ryu said she was feeling “a bit nervous” ahead of the deciding day after matching her career-best round at the 65 tournament, held in 2012.
“All I can do is focus on what I can do,” added the 32-year-old. “I’m just going to do some light work today and hopefully I can play well tomorrow as well.”
Playing in her second major as a professional, former U.S. amateur champion Sophia Schubert took third on 13 under with a round 66.
Spaniard Carlota Ciganda and Kim Sei-young of South Korea tied for fourth place with under-12s.
England contender Charley Hull is six shots behind Henderson in fifth after a round of 67.
Henderson started the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 64 and dropped his only shot of the penultimate day for a bogey in the first.
The former amateur world number one is in the hunt for a second major title after winning the 2016 PGA Women’s Championship aged 18.
