She explained in an Apple Music Essential Music interview that you are actually in control of your emotions, which means you can choose to take a logical approach to grief instead.

“I’m a very logical person,” Cyrus said in the interview, according to People. “And I really try not to get lost in emotion, because our emotion is lying to us. Our emotion sometimes makes us believe that every thought that we think is real. And I remember that at one point we had Dealing with heartbreak is like, ‘I’ll never be the same again. You know?’ My life is—’all these things I used to say to myself; it’s just not true.’

Cyrus definitely channels his emotions into songs. After all, she wrote the lyrics “things fall apart, but nothing breaks like a heart” (via Genie). But it turns out the advice is pretty solid. According to Healthline, you can’t stop your emotions from arising, but you can manage them using mindfulness practices. Once you get good at it, you can compartmentalize just like Miley.
