EU vote – here’s what it means for iPhones – Falkirk Herald

The European Parliament has voted to introduce the same charger port on all phones, tablets and cameras by 2024.

The vote means that USB-C connectors will be the European standard and are currently used by Android devices.

This decision poses a challenge to Apple, forcing them to change the charging port on most of their devices.

According to The Guardian, Apple could see this as a positive, as analysts believe it could encourage shoppers to buy the latest gadgets released by Apple, as opposed to those that don’t have a USB-C charging port.

Analysts continued to say the deal could impact Samsung, Huawei and other brands as the deal covers e-readers, headphones and some other technologies.

Speaking to The Guardian, Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, said: “This is a huge win for common sense. Although Apple has a huge installed base of Lightning-powered devices, the ubiquity of USB-C in all consumer electronics means that harmonizing on USB-C makes perfect sense.

Although this is an EU vote, Wood also said he also expects the USB-C port in the UK and other parts of the world.

“Regardless of whether or not the UK Government orders the switch to USB-C, UK consumers will get the technology by default. It wouldn’t make sense for consumer electronics to offer devices with anything else.

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 15 in 2023, and this phone may come with a USB-C charging port.
