Eternals star Lia McHugh explains why her character Sprite betrayed Gemma Chan’s Sersi in the action-packed final battle.
Lia McHugh, star of Eternals, explains to him why his Sprite character betrayed Gemma Chan’s Sersi during the action-packed final battle. Eternals was the 26th film to be released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the third MCU feature film to debut in 2021 after Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The film’s story revolves around the super-powered alien beings known as the Eternals who were created by ancient cosmic entities called the Celestials. After thousands of years of hiding, the Eternals are forced to emerge after the reappearance of their evil counterparts, the Deviants.
Eternals features an ensemble cast with game of thrones former students Richard Madden and Kit Harington, plus Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Brian Tyree Henry, Kumail Nanjiani and Lia McHugh, who plays Sprite, an Eternal who possesses power to project realistic illusions. The film received mixed reviews and was the first MCU film to not receive a Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 48%. However, it managed to be a box office hit hit by the pandemic, having grossed $400 million worldwide.
Now, in a recent interview with Reverse, Lia McHugh spoke at length about her breakthrough role as Sprite in Eternals, including his character”patterns“regarding her betrayal of Gemma Chan’s Sersi at the climax of the film. She pointed to Sprite”to injure” and “want to forget“as two major factors for his decision. McHugh also stated that the character”pain“had reached a point where it was unbearable, which Sersi could”to understand,“bringing it to”find forgivenessfor Sprite. Check out McHugh’s full quote below:
“Sprite’s motives at the end were driven by her hurt and her desire to forget. A lot of what she did, she never would have done. She wanted Arishem to emerge, she wanted our memories be erased. She wanted to forget her pain because it was so awful and deep that she couldn’t take it anymore. She needed to forget her and forget Ikaris. But Sersi is her sister. She knows her Very good. She understands how terribly difficult it is for Sprite. I don’t think she blamed her. She found forgiveness for her as much as she did for Ikaris.
Sprite’s love for Ikaris (Madden) drives her to choose to join him in stopping the rest of the Eternals from preventing the birth of Tiamut who was to destroy the planet. The climactic battle set on a volcano in the Indian Ocean included a moment when Sprite stabs Sersi in her attempts to break her, showing how far she would go to free herself from the pain she harbored. However, Sprite eventually changes her mind and helps the remaining Eternals form the United Spirit, giving Sersi the power to turn Tiamut to marble. After their triumph, Sprite asks Sersi to use the remaining Uni-mind energy to transform her into a human, ending her childlike state.
Having lived on Earth for thousands of years among humans and her eternal companions, in addition to witnessing Ikaris and Sersi’s romance blossom during this time, it’s only completely understandable that Sprite wants to live a normal life. McHugh’s comments make perfect sense because the fact that Sersi”forgivenessfor Ikaris and Sprite comes from his kind and compassionate nature as a character and hero. While it’s unclear if Sprite has a future in the MCU, fans can rewatch McHugh’s excellent turn as a character. nice now that Eternals airs on Disney+.
