Even if Enola Holmes isn’t technically part of the Sherlock Holmes canon – it’s based on a young adult series by Nancy Springer – he’s still witty and delighted with the mysteries of the original detectives. The film – which premiered on Netflix on September 23 – follows young detective Enola Holmes as she addresses the mystery of her missing mother, the wishes of her older brothers Mycroft and Sherlock, and the introduction of a cute marquis (which is not what it seems). Loaded with twists and turns, the film manages to squeeze in a few modern issues in the Victorian setting, making it feel relevant to the viewer. To understand Enola HolmesIn the end, we break down its premises, whether Enola finds his mother, how Enola solves the mystery of the Marquis, and the future implications of his relationship with Sherlock and Mycroft.

Premise of Enola Holmes

Enola Holmes wakes up on her 16th birthday to find her missing mother, Eudoria. She is then left in the care of her older brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft, with Myrcoft serving as guardian. Mycroft makes the decision to send him to a finishing school and Enola flees to London. Along the way, she intercepts Viscount Tewskbury, Marquess of Basilwether, and saves him from an assassination attempt. Once in London, they go their separate ways, and Enola soon discovers that the Marquis may not yet be out of danger.

Does Enola Holmes find her mother?

Initially, Enola arrives in London thinking that her mother may be waiting for her. She places a coded message in a series of newspapers, in the hopes that Eudoria will see it and respond to it. Just when she realizes her brothers may have been right that Eudoria had a nefarious plan, which Enola finds out due to a warehouse full of bombs, the man in the brown bowler hat tries his life . Enola then puts the search for her mother on hold and it is only after having saved the Marquis that she takes her back. Her mother then appears at her new home and explains why she left. Although Enola does not solve the mystery herself, her mother has left her clues and Enola is able to become the woman her mother had always hoped she would be. Eudoria doesn’t stay long, and depending on whether the pair keep in touch, Enola may have to resume the search once more.

How does Enola Holmes solve the case of the missing Marquis?

With the deductive skills of her brother Sherlock, Enola first notices that something is wrong with the missing Marquis when she spots a man in the brown bowler hat boarding the same train. Her suspicions are confirmed once the man in the brown bowler hat tries to catch Lord Tewksbury and she saves the young Marquis’ life by blowing him off the train. It wasn’t until the assassination of his life that everything fell into place about the man in the brown bowler hat sent by Lord Tewksbury’s family to kill him rather than save him – even though the family has the money to send a detective to do it. Enola first suspects Tewksbury’s uncle, but after a previous conversation with her grandmother and a confrontation at the family home, she finds out that it was the grandmother from the start. This led the Marquis to take his rightful place in the Chamber of Lords and to vote in favor of the reform. It also gives Enola a friend, or maybe more than a friend, for life.

What’s going on with Enola Holmes and his brothers, Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes?

Enola is basically growing up as an only child due to the age difference between her and her brothers. It is only when their mother disappears that they become a family again, although “family” is a loosely used term here. Mycroft feels that Enola is a savage and he doesn’t listen to her protests because he decides to send her to finish her studies. When she runs away, he gets angry and sends incompetent Inspector Lestrade to find her. Basically Mycroft sucks and everyone knows it – even Sherlock.

Sherlock and Enola are much more similar, as evidenced by his request to take her as a ward. At the end of the film, Sherlock recognizes the merits of the life Enola wants to lead and tells Mycroft that he will take her as a ward while Mycroft “washes his hands.” Even though Sherlock feigns ignorance that he knows where Enola is, he’s probably helped her find her accommodation and is watching her as she pushes her way. Hopefully there is a sequel that will explore the dynamics of Sherlock and Enola, even if Mycroft is just there to team up.
