English Premier League table 2022/23: Updated EPL standings and title race, Champions League places and relegation survival – Reuters Sports News

It’s the dream start Arsenal fans have been hoping for: a solid road win to open the 2022/23 season against a tough Crystal Palace side. And maybe the sensational pre-season run was no fluke after all.

Only one game is down and 379 to go, so there will definitely be plenty of twists and turns to come. Last season was the first in Premier League history in which every position in the table was up for grabs on the final matchday. There’s no reason to believe that something similar won’t happen again.

In the end, Liverpool lost one point less than title-winning Manchester City, who won a second successive Premier League crown and the two are the favourites. At the other end of the table, newly promoted sides Fulham, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest will be looking to secure a longer stay in the Premier League and become mainstays again. Forest return to the English top flight for the first time in 24 years.

Below is the full Premier League table followed by an overview of every run at the end of last season as we wait for the first matchweek of 2022/23 to be played.

Premier League title race

The Premier League title charge last season was thrilling, because Manchester City only finished one point ahead liverpool in a race that came down to the last day of the season.

This year, the title race should be a two-horse race between the aforementioned teams, unless someone else proves they can hold on to the giants. Tottenham appears early favorite to challenge Man City and Liverpool, but Arsenal and Manchester United also improved this summer.

Conversely, doubts remain as to whether chelsea can retain their Top 4 spot this season and will need to make a serious statement before fans believe they can defend the top spot.

Champions League places: hunt for the Top 4

In addition to the two title contenders, chelsea and Tottenham secured the last two Champions League spots last season, finishing third and fourth.

This campaign, the two clubs appear to be heading in opposite directions. Tottenham looked like one of the league’s best sides in the second half of last season, and a successful summer made Spurs the leaders for third in the table. Chelsea, meanwhile, are a team in transition, and an unkind pre-season has stoked fears the Blues could drop out of the coveted Top 4.

Those looking to take advantage of any missteps include Arsenal and Manchester United who have both improved over the summer and could be looking for an early push to gain an advantage.

European Premier League places

In the English top flight for 2022/23, in addition to the four Champions League places, there are three other places for European competitions:

  • Europa League (2 places): One automatically goes to the 5th-placed Premier League side and the other to the FA Cup winner. But if the FA Cup winner finishes in the Top 5, the Europa League place granted via the FA Cup will be transferred to the next best table finisher not yet qualified for the Europa League.
  • Conference League (1 place): This goes to the winner of the EFL Cup (Carabao Cup). However, if the EFL Cup winner already qualifies for the Champions League or Europa League, the Conference League spot is transferred to the next best table finisher who is not already qualified for European competition.

Last season, Arsenal confirmed a place in the Europa League with a fifth place.

Moreover, because Liverpool have won the FA Cup and EFL Cup competitions and had already confirmed a Champions League place with a second place in the table, sixth place Manchester United got a place in the Europa League despite being seventh West Ham earned a place in the Conference League.
