PRE-MATCH
Staging
England enter the knockout stage looking to continue another long run as they did in 2018, when they reached the semi-finals only to lose that game and the third-place game. The Three Lions got off to a good start in group play, securing dominating wins over Iran and Wales with a draw with the United States sandwiched between the two.
For Senegal, they want to continue their surprise run after coming out of Group A without Sadio Mané, one of the best players in the world. He still won’t have Mané for the rest of the tournament, but Senegal have already won twice without him and played a solid game in their loss to the Netherlands.
This is the first time that the two nations have faced each other.
Rahim Sterling out
England announced around an hour before the match that the midfielder would not play on Sunday to take care of a family matter.
