Jordan Pickford says England made a “statement” with their World Cup opener against Iran.
The England No1 had a blast in goal in the Three Lions World Cup opener, seeing his teammates put together an attacking clinic against a highly rated Iranian side.
Despite a fine performance from FC Porto’s Mehdi Taremi, who fired in a brilliant strike and then scored from the penalty spot, England were able to control the game.
Pickford was as impressed as anyone and said the performance and the result show his side are in Qatar to win the World Cup.
“We know why we are here, we want to win the tournament,” said the Everton man.
“We know how difficult it will be to win the tournament, but we are ready for it.
“There will always be challenges in football matches and Iran’s defensive record is very good.
“Scoring six goals against them in the first group game of the World Cup is a really good statement for us as a team and also building on us as a group going forward with the States. -United.”
The man who opened the scoring, Bellingham, put in a stunning performance on his World Cup debut as a 19-year-old.
The Borussia Dortmund midfielder continues to impress at such a young age, and Pickford is a fan on and off the pitch.
“He’s a great boy, a young boy but very mature,” he said.
“I think with him at Dortmund you can see that he already has leadership qualities as a captain at Dortmund.
“His performance the other night was amazing on his World Cup debut, he was magnificent, he’s a big boy, still a young boy, but quality.”
