A new Jeep Grand Cherokee arrives. We first saw a heavily camouflaged prototype in August 2019, and it remained an elusive creature in the world of spy photography. We only have one observation to whet our appetite for the next generation SUV, but a report from Allpar add a little more spice to the meal in the form of powertrain rumors.
While automakers are opting for smaller turbocharged engines, there has been speculation that the next seemingly standard Grand Cherokee (as in anything unmodified with SRT craziness) would entirely remove engine options V6 and V8. the Allpar The report seeks to crush these rumors with news from an alleged insider that yes, buyers will still have a choice between a Hemi V8 and a Pentastar V6. This is obviously not confirmed, and Jeep offers no official word on the vehicles in development. But it makes sense to offer some familiarity to buyers in the incredibly competitive SUV segment.

However, these engines are unlikely to be the only options on the table. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine would arrive several months after the launch of the Grand Cherokee. The power output is not known, and it is not clear if the four-pot could eventually replace the V6 in the range. The prevailing theory is that Jeep will stay with engines familiar to buyers at launch, then introduce the 2.0-liter to warm them up with the idea of a four-pot Grand Cherokee. the Allpar The report then talks about a plug-in hybrid model coming after that – maybe up to a year.
Whichever way you cut it, changes are coming for the Grand Cherokee and it’s about time. The current generation dates back to 2011, but age has not dampened sales of the SUV. 242,969 units were sold in 2019, an 8% increase over 2018. As such, we can understand Jeep’s reluctance to over-tip the boat with smaller engines and hybrid powertrains in a new generation.
We expect Jeep to unveil the new Grand Cherokee later this year as a 2021 model.
