Emma Corrin Calls for Oscars and BAFTAs to Introduce Non-Gender Categories

Emma Corrin has called for award ceremonies such as the Oscars and BAFTAs to introduce gender-neutral categories.

The 26-year-old Crown star insisted in a new interview that the awards, in their current formats, are not “inclusive enough” and said the change she hopes will make everyone feel ” recognized and represented”.

Emma – who identifies as non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them – said better representation in entertainment industry roles is needed to encourage “an urgency” to address the topic.

Emma won a Best Actress Golden Globe Award for her performance as Princess Diana in the fourth series of the hit Netflix drama, and is starring in two high-profile films this year, My Policeman and Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

Speaking to the BBC’s Today program about the possibility of gender-neutral categories at major awards shows, Emma said: “I’m hoping for a future in which that happens.”

“I don’t think the categories are inclusive enough at the moment. It’s about everyone being able to feel recognized and represented.

Emma added that greater representation was needed in entertainment industry roles to encourage “more urgency” to address the topic.

The Crown star asked, “Regarding the categories, do we need to specify if you’re nominated for a female lead or a male lead?”

“You can discuss awards and representation there, but the conversation really needs to be about greater representation in the material itself, in the content that we see for non-binary people, for queer people, for trans people, because then I think that’s going to change a lot.

“When those parts come out, which means more people and more actors playing those roles, I think there will be more urgency with which those issues will be addressed.”

Emma has publicly identified as non-binary since 2021 and publicly shared her journey with her gender identity on social media.

The comedian told The Today Programme: “Your gender identity is so tied to how you feel and it’s tied to a lot of how you want to be seen or are seen by people and that can be very triggering. or can make you feel uncomfortable if you don’t feel seen honestly or properly.

“I think it was necessary for me to be open and honest about it because otherwise I would have felt like I was looked down upon.”

The movie star added that she’s not worried that being open about her gender identity will limit the type of roles she’ll be offered in the future.

Emma explained, “I would never sacrifice integrity or honesty because of a job that I may or may not get,” they said.

“My being non-binary is in no way a rejection of femininity or my femininity. It’s sort of an embrace of that.

“I always want to play women, my experience on this earth has been a women’s experience – and now it’s kind of very fluid.”

Emma is currently preparing to take the stage in an adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel Orlando exploring gender identity.
