Eminem gave a nod to a long list of hip hop idols, both known and obscure, during his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction speech on Saturday.

In all, the rap legend took about three and a half minutes to mention more than 100 names after accepting the honor at the 37th annual ceremony held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

The Detroit rapper also performed during the five-plus hour show with help from special guests Ed Sheeran and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, with a set list that included My Name Is, Rap God and Sing For The Moment, Stan, Forever. and not afraid.

From there, he shared his long list of accomplishments during his career that spans 11 solo studio albums since 1996, which includes: “220 million albums sold, 13 No. 1 albums, Grammy Awards , an Emmy, an Oscar, the titles of the greatest musical artist of the 2000s and the best-selling hip-hop artist of all time.

Dressed in an all-black leather jacket and hood, Eminem was joined on stage by his first collaborator Denaun Porter, as his 10-minute six-song mix covered various aspects of his creativity.

At the time of his induction speech, the father of three was obviously honored to be in the company of these other great artists past and present.

“This shit is crazy. So I wrote some bullshit tonight that I’ll never remember, so I had to read it on paper and shit, but it’s from the heart,’ he began his speech. “I realize what an honor it is for me to be here tonight, and what a privilege it is to make the music that I love, and the music that basically saved my life.”

After stopping to ask where Dre had gone, the 15-time Grammy winner called him “the man who saved my life, ladies and gentlemen, Dr Motherf*** in ‘Dre.”

He continued: ‘So I’m probably not supposed to be here tonight for a couple of reasons. One of them I’m a rapper, and that’s the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And there are only a few of us right now who have ever been inducted, but there are only a few of us.

“Secondly, I almost died of an overdose in 2007, which was kinda lame,” he added before drawing attention to his daughter. “Hailie, cover your ears: because the drug was delicious, and I thought we had a good thing, man, but I had to screw it up and take too much.” G**damn. OK Hailie, he said.

After another pause, he regained his composure and continued, ‘Paul, I said, I said drugs were delicious, right? And ultimately I had to really push my way through the man to try and break into this music, and I’m so honored and I’m so grateful that I can even be here making hip hop music, man , because I love it so much.

Eminem went on to salute the many musical artists who have inspired his career.

“My musical influences are many and they say it takes a whole village to raise a child. Well, it took a whole genre and culture to raise me. They say success has many fathers, and that’s definitely true for me. So whatever my impact on hip-hop music, I could never have done this shit without some of the groundbreaking artists I’m about to mention right now.

It was at this point that Eminem read aloud this list of over 100 names, in alphabetical order, starting with 2 Live Crew and working down to YZ, which took over three minutes to complete. to end.

Some of the more recognizable names included Notorious BIG, 2Pac, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and his mentor, Dr. Dre, whom he credited with helping him achieve all of his musical successes.

Eminem joins a short list of rappers who have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame which includes Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, NWA, Tupac Shakur, the Notorious BIG, Jay-Z and LLCool J.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony is set to air on HBO and HBO Max on November 19.
