Elton John: “I collect photos but I hate the ones of myself”

“And a lot of them, I haven’t seen hung properly or at all. And so walking through them, they were hung so beautifully and the different sections and colors of the walls. I couldn’t be more happy I’m just amazed by what we collected and we are so proud of what we collected because we both love photography so much.

Sir Elton said there was also “a lot of pain and sorrow” on the walls, including images of the events of September 11, 2001.

“This is the first time I’ve shown our photographs from 9/11,” he said. “Every time we put them out, we ask ourselves: is it going to be okay to show them, is it too raw?”

Of the 2,000 9/11 images they have, they only display four. Sir Elton insisted it was important to collect footage of this pain.

“The image of the man falling vertically from the World Trade Center is one of the most beautiful images I have ever seen and yet one of the most tragic,” he said.

“And sometimes in tragic images, whether they are paintings or photographs, there is a lot of beauty. And that’s why the exhibition is called Fragile Beauty, because there is beauty in All.”
