DeGeneres – who was the name and face behind The Ellen DeGeneres Show – was heavily criticized for perpetuating a “toxic work culture” on her show, which led to a massive drop in ratings for her once-popular show. The show ultimately closed in 2022.

During her latest stand-up routine in California, Ellen DeGeneres joked about being “kicked out of show business” for being “mean,” People reported. DeGeneres said she became “the most hated person in America” as the allegations began to pile up, leading three producers to leave the show, which ultimately ended in 2022.
“The hatred lasted a long time and I tried to avoid watching the news. The girl who said “be nice” wasn’t nice. That was the title… I make jokes about what happened to me, but it was devastating. It took me a long time to want to do something again,” she was quoted as saying.
Ellen also opened up about how she was “in a funk” and it started to affect her wife Portia de Rossi. “She was watching this happen to me…she lived it with me,” she said of Portia. The 66-year-old comedian said she “hated” the way the series – which she “loved so much” – ended, leaving its viewers with a negative and damaging perception of her.
