Edouard Mendy has become Chelsea’s eighth signing of the summer, the Premier League club have announced.
Mendy, 28, follows Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Xavier Mbuyamba, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz to Stamford Bridge, with Frank Lampard finally adding the keeper he’s been looking for all summer.
The glove comes from Rennes after only a year with the Roazhon Park club, having already been with his colleagues in Ligue 1 Reims and Marseille.
His transfer was reportedly completed on the recommendation of Chelsea’s greatest goalkeeper Petr Cech, who currently works as the Blues’ technical and performance adviser and himself moved to Stamford Bridge from Rennes 16 years ago.
Mendy, selected eight times by Senegal, has also been praised in the past by Chelsea’s chief goaltender Christophe Lollichon, who last year called him “ proactive ”, “ very influential ” and “ great guardian ” during an interview.
A relative amount unknown during his move to west London, Mendy is set to challenge Kepa Arrizabalaga to become Chelsea’s premier goalkeeper.
Kepa has struggled during his two years with the Blues, and his performances last season have come under heavy criticism over the weaknesses of the Spain international.
He also conceded a weak effort at long range in Chelsea’s opener of the season against Brighton and then made a huge mistake in the loss to Liverpool last Sunday, giving Sadio Mane a second goal.
Lampard has since been on the hunt for a new glove maker, with Mendy being identified and brought to Stamford Bridge as the Blues continue their spending summer.
