Ed Sheeran urged his fans to help Sir Elton John drop him from the top spot on the UK Singles Rankings.
On Sunday, the Official Charts Company’s provisional ranking showed that Sir Elton and Dua Lipa’s single Cold Heart was set to end Sheeran’s four-week reign at the top of the rankings with Shivers.
Cold Heart was second in the standings last week.
Sheeran wrote on Instagram: “@eltonjohn is so close to knocking me out of first place in the UK
“This will be his first number one in almost twenty years and I really want it to happen.
“Please go buy / stream / download Cold Heart with @dualipa now, 15 weeks at # 1 was more than I expected anyway, love you all.
“Who doesn’t want to be knocked down by Elton anyway.”
Sheeran shared the post with a black and white photo of himself with Sir Elton.
Sir Elton set a new record on Wednesday by becoming the only actor to achieve a top 10 on the UK charts over six different decades, according to the Official Charts Company.
It has surpassed musicians including Elvis, Cher, Sir Cliff Richard, Michael Jackson and David Bowie, all of whom have reached the top 10 songs over five decades.
Sir Elton, 74, made 33 top 10 singles during his career, making his chart debut in 1971 with Your Song, which reached seventh and returned to fourth in 2002.
The 1970s were his most successful period, with 10 top 10 singles including Rocket Man, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart and Are You Ready For Love.
His last number one came in 2005 when he appeared on 2Pac’s track Ghetto Gospel.
The final ranking of this week’s charts will be revealed on Friday.
