But will it be a real Poke-song?
When Pokemon celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, there was a lot going on, big and small, including plenty of events and releases to commemorate all the things the franchise had done during its long tenure. You might remember some stop-motion videos that showed how things have evolved, or big announcements like the one from Pokemon Legends Arceus, etc. One of the most curious things was that of the P25 series, in which a group of internationally renowned artists came together to make music with Pokemon themes. Now Ed Sheeran will participate in the project.
This comes from a surprising Instagram post where Ed Sheeran noted that next week he will be releasing a single known as Celestial. The artist even posted a simple image of himself with Pikachu on his back to indicate how much of a collaboration the song is, as well as to show his enthusiasm for the track and his commitment to the franchise.
“I started with Pokemon cards when the craze hit in elementary school when I was about 7, then the TV show was on TV, so I was trying to record it on the same VHS every week.”
He also made a startling revelation about the music video which Celestial will have.
“Celestial comes out next Thursday, and the video is incredibly amazing, brought to life by the amazing folks at Pokémon.
It’s one of the more exciting collaborations, and we’ll be interested to see what it looks and sounds like when it arrives. While many people were fine with the various P25 collaborations, like those with Katy Perry and Post Malone, there was a distinct lack of poke-feeling in the music they released. While songs like Katy Perry’s Electric had a music video featuring the singer and Pikachu together, the song itself did not speak Pokemon in any way outside of a loose reference to tradition. Also, when Post Malone did his concert special, it was just him singing his own tunes along with an animated version of himself on a virtual stage with Pokemon flying around him.
Was it unique? Yes. Was it something screaming Pokemon concert? No. In fact, it was very strange because the songs they chose from Post Malone’s catalog were very mature in content and some of the lines even had to be changed for the concert itself.
From what Sheeran detailed in his Instagram post, his song might actually be Pokemon-related, but we’ll just have to wait until next Thursday to find out.
If you think you have an idea for someone who is good at singing a real Pokemon song, let us know!
