Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia talks about Dwayne Johnson’s engagement as DC’s antihero, believing he was meant to play him.
Black adam Producer Hiram Garcia talks about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s engagement as DC’s antihero, believing he was meant to play him. The DC Extended Universe project has been in development for almost 15 years, with Johnson originally expressing interest in portraying the character for a Shazam movie before eventually signing on in late 2014 for a solo movie. Production was ramped up by Warner Bros. and New Line shortly after the release of Shazam! with Johnson recommending director Jaume Collet-Serra to take the helm after impressing him with his work on Disney’s Jungle cruise.
The story for Black adam is still being kept a secret, but will explore the titular anti-hero, a former Kahndaq slave who was given superpowers by the wizard Shazam but finds himself imprisoned for 5,000 years for abusing those powers. In the comics, the character was well known for becoming the arch-nemesis of Shazam, the new Wizard’s Champion who is currently played by Zachary Levi in the DCEU. The film will also mark the debut of the Justice Society of America comic book franchise with Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, and Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher.
With a slew of projects in the works for the production studio, Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions spoke to Collider. In response to whether Johnson is considering joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Garcia said that actor and Marvel boss Kevin Feige has “flirted“with some ideas although believed Black adam was ultimately the project they wanted to devote their time to. See what Garcia said below:
“We have always been very attached to what we want to build with Black adam. Black Adam was the character we wanted to bring to life and thought DJ was meant to play. Once we set our sights on this character over a decade ago, it was hard to imagine DJ playing with anyone else. “
With Johnson being committed to the role of Black Adam since 2007, the idea of her meeting Marvel and Feige for a potential role in the MCU is intriguing, as it would have been before the franchise launched in the 2008s. Iron Man. Although his early days as an actor saw Johnson exploring many action subgenres, including the video game world of LossInterestingly, the former WWE star never appeared in a superhero title, either as a supporting performer or as a hero. His early discussions of portraying Shazam or Black Adam have been an exciting notion for Johnson fans since the first film entered development, but his greater stature and personality has always made his turn as Black Adam greater appeal to followers.
One of the other things to note in Garcia’s comments is the level of engagement Johnson and his team have put into Black adam. As a producer as well as a star, he’s clearly dedicated to making his first stint as a superhero worth it. Only time will tell if the elongated development and its efforts prove to be effective when the film hits theaters in July 2022.
