Xiaomi Mi A1 is the first of the company to go without the popular MIUI skin cooked on Android OS. At the time, Android Nougat ran the show, although clean thanks to Android One.
The promise of Android One is more than just clean software. The program, launched in 2014 but which peaked in 2017, also aims to provide consistent security updates for up to three years and at least two major operating system upgrades.
That’s certainly what you get with the Mi A1, which now receives the latest security patch from March 2020. It’s pretty cool for a $ 200 smartphone in its third year in the hands of some owners.
The update arrives over the air as software version V10.0.19.0.PDHMIXM, compared to the previous version V10.0.18.0.PDHMIXM provided with the February patches. The OTA size, for whatever reason, varies, with some getting a 74.3 MB package while others getting 77.95 MB.
Again, it’s not clear why the OTA sizes are slightly different. Additionally, we can’t tell if this update enables Jio and Airtel VoWiFi support on the Mi A1, but you can let us know once you’ve installed the March update on your device.
On the other hand, what is pretty clear is that all hopes for the Mi A1 Android 10 update are gone with the release of each Pie-based security patch.
It is not yet known whether the petition filed by the owners of Mi A1’s hope that Xiaomi will provide the third operating system upgrade to Android 10 for this device is bearing fruit.
On the brighter side, the Mi A1, like many other Xiaomi devices, is user-friendly for developers. In fact, you can already get your hands on a custom LineageOS 17.1 ROM based on Android 10 for the Mi A1 right now.
