Robin Williams didn’t get to play his favorite DC character, Riddler
Robin Williams, being the powerhouse talent that he is, has proven time and time again that no character or genre is beyond his reach. In addition to playing a wide range of roles, the late Oscar winner also harbored a desire to portray characters from the superhero world. Williams confessed that he was extremely keen to explore the nuances of DC’s Riddler and even came close to playing the role in the 1995 film, Batman forever. Unfortunately, this was not to be and the role ultimately went to Jim Carey.

Several years later, while Christopher Nolan was developing The black Knight Trilogy with Christian Bale, Robin Williams who had already worked with Nolan in Insomniaonce again had the opportunity to try his luck with Riddler, who was to make an appearance in The Black Knight Rises. This time, he also had competition from another star, Leonardo DeCaprio, who had been considered for the role but reportedly turned it down. But as luck would have it, Nolan decided to abandon the idea of introducing Riddler into the trilogy and instead cast Tom Hardy as Bane. Speaking to Flexible Head, the Patch Adams The actor regretted the missed opportunity and said:
“I would work with Nolan again in a second, playing anyone in anything. It would be fun to work with him again. I would play the Riddler if they followed through on the offer! I got screwed twice over this. Years ago they gave me the Joker, then gave it to Jack Nicholson, then they gave me the Riddler and gave it to Jim Carrey. I was like, “Okay, is this real? If it’s a real offer, yes! Don’t pump me anymore, motherfuckers.’
Although Williams didn’t get the chance to try her hand at Riddler, there’s no doubt that the versatile star would have breathed fresh air into the character in her own unique style. Unfortunately, with his passing, this will remain a dream.
