More than three dozen Disney Store stores will close in the next two weeks.
The first round of store closings comes a week after The Walt Disney Co. announced it would close at least 60 Disney stores in North America this year. The company updated its store locator tool to identify stores closing “on or before” March 23. At least 38 stores in the United States are expected to close during this round.
The company said it was reducing the number of stores to focus on its e-commerce business. The 60 closures represent about a third of stores in North America.

Victoria’s Secret, Best Buy, Macy’s, Bed Bath & Beyond and JC Penney have announced they will close stores in 2021. Clothing retailer Christopher & Banks has announced it will close all of its stores after filing for protection in Chapter 11 bankruptcy matters.
Disney stores in 16 states are closing, with California losing the most locations with nine stores closed and seven in Texas closing.
“As consumer behavior has shifted to online shopping, the global pandemic has changed what consumers expect from a retailer,” said Stephanie Young, president of consumer games and publishing , in a press release.
The closures will not affect more than 600 Disney Parks stores and other locations, including small Disney stores inside Target stores.
“Over the past few years, we’ve focused on reaching consumers where they already spend their time, such as expanding Disney stores around the world,” Young said. “We now plan to create a more flexible and interconnected e-commerce experience that gives consumers easy access to unique, high-quality products across all of our franchises. “
Disney officials have not provided an official list of closings and have ordered USA TODAY to use the store locator tool on its website to find stores that are closing.
