For his third film, dead Pool moves in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And another familiar face is coming with us.
Hugh Jackman will play Wolverine in Deadpool 3. Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, announced the plot and casting decision in a video posted Tuesday and more teased Wednesday.
The film is about to be released in theaters September 6, 2024. (Yes, sorry, 2024.)
“Hard to keep my mouth shut about this one”, Reynolds tweeted accompanied by the short video. (“Sewn Closed Mouth” refers to a scene at the end of the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where Reynolds appears as Deadpool with a sewn mouth.)
He adds that Deadpool’s first appearance in the MCU must be special, as scenes show Reynolds sparring, using the restroom, and pouring Aviation American Gin – Reynolds owns a financial stake in the company — in a cup of coffee.
Reynolds then confesses that “we had an idea (to make the movie special)” before addressing Jackman, who is walking around in the background.
“Hey, Hughes?” Reynolds calls. “Do you want to play Wolverine one more time?”
Jackman agrees, and big words announce the movie is “COMING HUGHN,” with the September 6, 2024 release date appearing at the end.

Reynolds’ first two Deadpool movies were set in the same non-MCU continuity as the Fox X-Men movies. disney acquired Fox in 2019and the writers of Deadpool 3 promised to keep the hero’s fetid maw intact although he worked in the family MCU.
As for Jackman – spoilers ahead – he was thought to have retired from the iconic role of Wolverine after the 2017 movie Logan, which seemed to kill the character. After this movie Jackman posted a brief video thank his fans for their years of support. Looks like it wasn’t goodbye after all.
Reynolds dropped a follow up video Wednesday, promising to explain how Wolverine can return after the events of Logan.
“Quick explainer video that goes into… 1) timeline questions, 2) Logan’s canon, 3) MCU FAQs, 4) whether we can do this all day or not,” the actor tweeted.
Sitting on a couch with Jackman, Reynolds notes that Logan is set in the year 2029 and the next Deadpool movie won’t change that. Before he can drop any more details, the 1984 Wham classic Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go drowns him out. Reynolds and Jackman grow increasingly animated in their explanation, but we can’t hear anything.
The song cuts out in the final seconds, so we can hear the pair thank Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige.
“Thank you, MCU,” Jackman says.
Marvel’s recent adventures have apparently been building towards the introduction of the X-Men, and it seems likely that Deadpool – who is a mutant like the X-Men – is tied to that. The character is also known for breaking the fourth wall by addressing the audience and having a loose take on continuity.
The events of the Fox X-Men movies create multiple timelines when the characters travel through time. And the MCU has been dabbling in the multiverse lately, so it’s possible the Wolverine we meet in Deadpool is from a separate reality from Logan’s or is ripped from an earlier point in the timeline.
If you are looking for new mutant adventures before 2024, it will be part of the list in Disney Plus X-Men ’97 Series. It will continue the ’90s animated series storyline when it hits the streaming service in fall 2023, with voice actor Cal Dodd. back as Wolverine.
