Stopping before entering to watch Cirque du Soleil’s LUZIA, David stopped to comment on The Larkins, an ITV 2021 adaptation of the classic novel The Darling Buds of May by HE Bates.

The star appeared in the television series of the same name as the novel from 1991 to 1993.

He played Sidney Charles ‘Pop’ Larkin, the father of the family, with David giving his opinion on the new program Thursday night.

The screen star told MailOnline: “It’s not as good as the original. I didn’t really need to give them any advice though. It was a bit surreal to watch it go by, du already seen.’

David then took stock of what he was doing professionally, insisting that he was looking for ideas from TV bosses: “I have been very busy writing and creating documentaries, just trying to interest channels.

“I’m more creative, I’m still waiting for Tom Cruise to employ me in Mission Impossible.”

The Larkins – now airing on ITV – follows the family life of Pop Larkin, now played by Bradley Walsh, his wife Ma Larkin (Joanna Scanlan) and their daughter Mariette (Sabrina Bartlett) as they navigate village life.

Durrell screenwriter Simon Nye tells the story of the working-class family, which first came to life in HE Bates’ 1950s novel, to a new generation of fans who missed the classic ’90s, which gave Hollywood star Catherine Zeta Jones her acting breakthrough.

Speaking of taking on the role of Pop Larkin last year, Bradley said, “I am delighted to be asked to be a part of this much loved and iconic story series.

“The warmth and affection that H. E Bates has generated through his books is so uplifting and I look forward to being a part of the Larkin family. It will be a hoot.

Speaking to MailOnline last month at a press event ahead of the series, Bradley expressed his enthusiasm for his upcoming role.

He said: “When I was asked, I said yes immediately. I only watched one episode during the day but was still so excited.

“It was a long time coming with the postponement of the shoot. The whole show is family based and after this year it’s in the foreground.

“I hope viewers really take it to heart. I’m a family man so it was a joy to film. ‘
