Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones seem to have passed from what is one of the bitterest rivalries in UFC history.
But that doesn’t mean DC will never forget.
Cormier was one of four fighters to hold two UFC world titles simultaneously and was the second man to do so, yet Jones’ name is synonymous with his career.
Jones is widely regarded as one of the greatest full-fledged MMA fighters of all time. He is the current lightweight champion and has never been beaten.
He holds the record for successful title defenses at the UFC and one of them came against Cormier.
A lot of bad blood has built up between them over the years, from press conference smashes to Bones’ dubious drug record in sports, which actually resulted in the reversal of his second victory over Cormier.
Cormier was recently recognized as the second fighter to pass 50 USDA tests and was questioned over his feud with Jones at the event.
“I think over time things will go away,” he said. “We seem to be on different paths, of course. But the water under the bridge will never be.
“I think for a guy like me who worked so hard to achieve everything I did, and honestly like I said when I won the heavyweight championship, now there is something so completely outside of this guy, no one can ever question him. “
“But these things that happened really hurt my career. And it’s easier for them to move on than for the person who had the … my career has been damaged by these actions. Not that.”
Before his loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC 241 where he lost the UFC heavyweight title, the only man he ever lost was Jones.
Jones killed him at 205 pounds and there are rumors that he will move to the heavyweight.
Cormier, 41, in two weeks, said he wanted one more hit on Miocic before calling him a day, apparently without considering another date with Jones.
“I was fortunate to have many moments in combat, and I hope I still have one in me,” said Cormier.
“This is really all I can think of. That’s it. Just a moment to hoist this belt over my head as I have done so many times.
“I spoke to the UFC and we have a pretty clear idea of what we want to do. And now I have to see what the champion says. I don’t make the rules. He is the champion.
“I respect that, I respect Miocic, and I just hope it happens sooner rather than later,” he added. “We have an idea of what we are going to do, and I think it will work.”
