Croatia, their opponents on Friday, demanded a penalty shootout to eliminate an entertaining Japanese side who had already got the better of Germany and Spain in the group stage.
Ivan Perisic’s header canceled out Japan’s opener but Dominik Livakovic was the hero of the shootout, saving three penalties as Croatia won 3-1 to advance to the last eight for the third time in its short history.
Zlatko Dalic’s side were the only team to finish second in the group stage to qualify for the quarter-finals, but history does not favor them as Brazil have won the last three matches between the two sides, the Croats won in none of the four meetings.
Neymar and Roberto Firmino were on the scoresheet the last time the two sides met, in a friendly at Anfield ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
