A frustrating night in front of goal for Portugal was finally cut short by Ronaldo when he was brought down in the box by Southampton’s Mohammed Salisu.

Ghana were just starting to look dangerous with the threat of Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus, but Ronaldo soon had his side in front.

The striker, who recently terminated his United contract by mutual agreement, then did what he does best.

Picking the top left corner of the net, opposing keeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi stood absolutely no chance against the powerful effort, despite going the right way.

Ronaldo then walked away to the corner flag in joy, his teammates and the whole stadium joining in his “SIUUU” celebration.

His joy was short-lived, however, with former West Ham and Swansea striker Andre Ayew striking in from close range eight minutes later.

But then it was up to the next generation to make sure there was no slip-up against the lowest-ranked team in the tournament.

Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix retook the lead with a superb finish five minutes later, before Portugal flexed their extraordinary depth with substitute Rafael Leao making it 3-1. Ghana pulled one back in the 89th minute through Osman Bukari to set up a stand finish.

Ronaldo beat his duck at the World Cup in 2006, he scored again in 2010 and 2014 before scoring four career goals at Russia 2018.
