We see huge number of reports about Instagram app crashing on Android phones. From Google Pixel users to Samsung, Huawei or OnePlus users are all reporting the issue.
Instagram would be aware of the problem. Someone who contacted Google learned the following from their customer service:
This is a known issue with the Instagram app and they are getting a lot of requests regarding the error. We have forwarded the problem to our specialists and we hope that the application developer will solve it soon
A workaround that seems to have done the trick for many users is to uninstall and reinstall the app from the Play Store. The other is to force stop the app and clear the app cache. You can try them out until Instagram releases an official fix. Some users even say that the beta version of the app works well.
Considering the popularity of the app, there is a deluge of complaints on Twitter. On Reddit, there are already several threads with hundreds of reports of the problem.

Update 1 (June 5)
The problem was resolved. Here is the official word:
Yesterday, an issue caused the Instagram app to crash on Android devices. We’re sorry and things are resolved! If you’re still having issues, try reinstalling or updating your app. (Source)
Update 2 (July 15, 2022)
09:10 (IST): The Instagram app has started crashing again on Android smartphones. New reports of the problem have appeared on Twitter in the past 24 hours.
@instagram the app keeps crashing when I try to open it. Returns to my phone’s home screen. Read people have this problem since July 12th……(Source)
Welp, my tablet decided to screw up my Instagram career by constantly crashing the app on me. I completely give up for now (Source)
Instagram’s communications team has yet to acknowledge the issue or provide details on when a fix can be expected.
That said, users can try installing an older version of the app by downloading an APK file from a trusted source to see if that fixes the problem.
6:48 p.m. (IST): It looks like the crashing issue with Instagram has now been resolved as we haven’t come across any new user reports on Twitter. Moreover, reports on Downdetector also suggest the same.
Update 3 (August 12, 2022)
12:27 p.m. (IST): Instagram is crashing again for many iOS users and those affected have gotten up to speed. Twitter to report the problem.
6:50 p.m. (IST): It looks like the Instagram crashing issue has now been fixed, as users are reporting Twitter has disappeared.
Update 4 (02 September 2022)
1:30 p.m. (IST): Many users are again reports that Instagram plants for them. The problem seems to affect Android users.
Update 5 (September 14, 2022)
9:15 p.m. (IST): It seems that a recent Instagram update is once again causing the app to crash on Android smartphones. Affected users took for Twitter complain about the problem.
Right now, the only potential workaround might be to download and install an old APK file for Instagram.
Update 6 (September 23, 2022)
09:35 (IST): Over the past few hours, many Instagram users have reported (1, 2, 3, 4, 56, 7, 8) that the app randomly crashes for them.
Unfortunately, Instagram support has not yet acknowledged this bug.
Update 7 (04 October 2022)
4:20 p.m. (IST): Many users on iOS 16.0.2 are now reports Instagram crashes for them after updating it to v255.0 17. Users say the app won’t open and crashes when they try to open it.
Also, basic troubleshooting steps such as uninstalling and reinstalling the app or restarting the device doesn’t seem to help the people concerned fix it.
Update 8 (October 05, 2022)
