The Dallas Cowboys committed a calamity of errors in Sunday’s playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, also showing signs of rough play in the loss. Dallas committed 14 penalties in the 23-17 loss, tying the NFL record for the most by any team in a playoff game.
The 14 flags cost Dallas 89 yards in the loss. The errors were a season high and represented the fifth time this year (including the playoffs) the Cowboys had committed more than 10 penalties.
Interestingly enough, it was the fifth time in NFL playoff history that a team had committed 14 penalties in the game – but the first time that team had lost. The 1980 Oakland Raiders beat the Houston Oilers in the AFC wild card round with 14 penalties, as did the 1981 San Francisco 49ers, who topped the New York Giants in the round NFC division. The 2002 Oakland Raiders beat the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship Game and the 2009 Dallas Cowboys beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the wildcard round.
‘Those are penalties, and it was self-inflicted,’ NFL on CBS color commentator Tony Romo said after the game on CBS Sports HQ. “It was almost a lack of mental approach, it was reckless. So many penalties before the snap, and you can’t have that many and expect to beat good teams. The Cowboys really hurt themselves.”
The Cowboys finished with 127 penalties on the season, the most in the NFL. Their 1,103 penalty yards were second in the league.
