Dallas Cowboys first-year kicker Brandon Aubrey was navigate NFL history with a historic first 16 games in its 2023 season.

The NFC Pro Bowl kicker has connected on all 35 field goal attempts this season, tying him with former Minnesota Vikings kicker Gary Anderson (1998) for the second-most makes in a season without failure. If he were able to score three in a row on the road at FedEx Field on Sunday against the Washington Commanders, he would break former Indianapolis Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt’s all-time record of 37 , established during the 2003 season.

However, that streak ended unceremoniously in the first quarter. Commanders rookie defensive end Joshua Pryor blew through the middle of the Dallas line to crush Aubrey’s first kick into the ground with both hands.

Aubrey ends his streak tied for the second-most field goals without a miss in a single season in NFL history. He will still leave the 2023 season with a strong hold on the NFL record for most field goals made without missing to begin an NFL career at age 35. Aubrey broke the previous mark by 17 kicks, beating former Cleveland Browns kicker Travis Coons. ‘record of 18 set in 2015.

Earlier in the week, Aubrey was comfortable talking about this streak since he said he doesn’t believe in curses.

“Not all of them,” Aubrey responded Thursday when asked how superstitious he is. “It’s impossible to control the little details. So other than doing what I can physically do in my process, I don’t really have any superstitions like that.”

Cowboys Pro Bowl punter Bryan Anger, who is also Aubrey’s starter, was in sync with Aubrey, saying not talking about a streak like that might do more harm than help.

“I’m not a superstitious guy and I think holding on to things is more of a crutch than talking about them,” Anger said Thursday. “I try to talk about things, but [long-snapper] Thirty [Sieg] sometimes gets angry with me because I tell him a situation, and he says “don’t say that”. So I try to speak into existence, I guess. It’s a crutch. It’s a mental crutch if you hold on to things. We talked about how fresh his journey has been so far and we hope it continues. Let it be known, I think.”

He ended up with two missed kicks this season after making his second attempt for 36 yards.

Aubrey’s 36 field goals, which he reached after hitting his third kick from 50 yards out, are the most in the NFL.
