About a week after parting ways with Kellen Moore, the Dallas Cowboys have a new offensive coordinator. The team announced on Saturday afternoon that it had named Brian Schottenheimer to the position.
The Cowboys had one of the NFL’s most efficient and explosive offenses in the league during Moore’s tenure, ranking second in total yards and total points, and leading the league in scoring in each healthy seasons of Dak Prescott. However, the offense has struggled in back-to-back playoff losses to the San Francisco 49ers the past two seasons, so the team decided to go in a different direction. This direction is now clear.
“I am thrilled and grateful for this exciting opportunity and accept the high standards and expectations that come with this role and the Dallas Cowboys organization,” Schottenheimer said in a statement. “Having a great, long-standing respect and appreciation for Mike McCarthy as a person, a leader and a head coach makes this a very rewarding and compelling time for me. The ability to win with great teammates who share the same goals and the alignment with how to teach them, makes it special for me and I’m very grateful for that.”
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said the following about Schottenheimer: “I am very pleased to have Brian take on this key role on our team. He has been an important part of our staff in the past and has a great understanding of where we are and where we want Brian also has an exceptionally strong foundation, history and relationships beyond his time here which translates very well into understanding what our operating approach will be and execution going forward. It will be an exciting and effective transition for us that I am confident will contribute to the growth and results we all expect.”
McCarthy will be the caller now that Moore has moved to Los Angeles, but Schottenheimer will likely be responsible for setting up and implementing the offense in his role as coordinator. If Schottenheimer’s name sounds familiar, it should. He’s the son of longtime NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer, and he’s also been in the league for a long time. Schottenheimer spent last season as a consultant in Dallas and has 12 years of experience as an offensive coordinator at the NFL level.
However, those years of experience should inspire relatively little confidence. In 12 seasons in the role, Schottenheimer coordinated an offense that ranked in the top-10 just four times in points, top-10 in yards only, top-10 in Football Outsiders’ DVOA just three times. and the top 10 in Tru Media. EPA version per game only twice. On average, his offenses have always been below average. But the Cowboys apparently think he and McCarthy are the tandem that will elevate one of the best offenses in the league, ever further.
