(Reuters) – Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is expected to return for the final part of the season after fully recovering from two knee injuries, coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Thursday.

Real boss Ancelotti said he would be careful with Courtois, who has not played this season after suffering a torn ACL in August and a torn meniscus in March.

Substitute Andriy Lunin will start Friday’s La Liga match at Real Sociedad and Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg at Bayern Munich, but the Belgian goalkeeper is expected to be back next week.

“I have to think carefully about the future of the team. There has been a lot of wear and tear. Courtois is doing well, he will be available next week and could play against Cadiz,” Ancelotti said in a press conference on Thursday.

Courtois’ injury was expected to be a blow to Real’s hopes this season, but Ukrainian Lunin was an effective replacement, establishing himself as first choice ahead of former Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in the absence of the Belgian.

Lunin was Real’s penalty hero as they beat Manchester City to reach the Champions League semi-finals, making two saves in their 4-3 shootout win after an inspired performance as they drew 1-1 in the quarter-final second leg.

However, Courtois, 31, is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and is likely to regain his starting place with a LaLiga-Champions League double up for grabs.

He was named Player of the Match in the 2022 Champions League final after producing a memorable performance, making nine saves to hold off Liverpool as Real clinched a record 14th European title with a 1-0 victory in Paris.

Real are brimming with confidence after their 3-2 win over bitter rivals Barcelona on Sunday.

The La Liga leaders’ quest for a record 36th Spanish title gathered pace as they moved 11 points clear of second-placed Barca with six matches remaining.

Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo are doubtful for Friday’s match against sixth-placed Real Sociedad due to illness and Ferland Mendy is still recovering from a leg injury, but Ancelotti said his side will make every effort to get closer to the championship title.

“With all the enthusiasm in the world, the goal is very clear, we have seven points left to win the championship. We have to get them as soon as possible,” Ancelotti said.

“Until mathematics does not guarantee us the title, we have to fight. The dynamic is very good, it is important that we continue to compete and get the most out of it. Win as much as possible. Winning is the best thing to do. Keep this momentum going, that’s why we have to win tomorrow.”
