SHAFI ULLAH – VTC DRIVER, DUBAI
Originally from Peshawar, Pakistan, Shafi Ullah dreamed of becoming an engineer. Instead, he has been driving a taxi in Dubai for 22 years, earning money to send to his family.
For him, it is vital to stay in touch with his son, a student at university. Graduation is fast approaching, and although Shafi cannot attend in person, he can watch the ceremony through a clear high-definition video connection.
FAIZA – HAIRDRESSER, SHARJAH
Faiza went abroad to support her two sisters who remained in Lahore. One is getting married and Faiza is responsible for funding the ceremony – which is just a week away. Luckily, she can transfer the funds quickly and easily with a digital banking app.
QASIM – CONSTRUCTION WORKER, ABU DHABI
Qasim traveled from the lush Swat Valley to Abu Dhabi. There, he worked for the past five years in the construction industry, earning money to finance his mother’s medical treatment. She’s doing better, but it’s hard to keep in touch: Cell phone reception at the worksites has been spotty at best, and Swat, while charming, lacks the cell towers needed for a solid connection. But when Qasim receives a surprise video call from his brother at home, he realizes things have changed…
