Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen said Saturday that former President Trump’s calls to protest the Manhattan prosecutor’s investigation signal a desire for “another violent confrontation” on his behalf.
“It’s eerily similar to the battle cry he gave just before the January 6 uprising, you know, especially the call, you know, for protest,” Cohen said in an interview with MSNBC. “And I agree…it would have been smart for Donald to write ‘peaceful protest’, but he doesn’t want a peaceful protest.”
Trump said in an article on Truth Social earlier today that he expects to be arrested next week as part of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation into a silent payment made to the adult film star Stormy Daniels during her 2016 campaign.
The former president claimed ‘illegal leaks’ indicate that ‘the by far leading Republican candidate and former President of the United States of America, will be arrested on Tuesday of next week’ and called on his supporters to protest and ‘ take our nation”. back.”
Cohen, who testified before the New York grand jury earlier this week, paid Daniels $130,000 shortly before the 2016 election to buy his silence over an alleged affair with Trump.
The former president’s longtime fixer pleaded guilty in 2018 to violating campaign finance laws in the silent payment.
Cohen told MSNBC on Saturday that Trump or his team were likely contacted by the district attorney’s office, rather than getting the information through “leaks,” as the former president suggested in his message.
“Knowing Donald as I do, I see no reason why Donald would have released the statement unless he, or his team, had been contacted by the district attorney’s office and briefed accordingly,” Cohen said.
“He is exactly the one who reacts to the information he has and not to the leaks, as he would like to say, by the prosecutor’s office,” he added. “There are no leaks from the prosecutor’s office, I can tell you that for sure. This all comes from the Trump camp.
He also suggested that Trump’s calls for a protest likely stemmed from a belief that it could give his 2024 campaign a boost.
“These fools representing him, this lawyer clown show, what they believe is that it will propel him into the White House having another violent insurrection,” Cohen said.
“But more importantly for Donald, it’s all about one big scam,” he continued. “He’ll be looking to cash in on this action by soliciting contributions to protect him, your favorite president from racist Alvin Bragg and all, you know, left-wingers.”
