- The Chatroom Clubhouse app has finally launched a beta version on Android.
- The app always requires you to join a waitlist or receive an invitation from a friend.
- Availability is limited in the United States at this time.
The Clubhouse audio-only chat app was the talk of the Tech Town earlier this year, but the big downside was that it was limited to iOS only. We say “was” because the company has finally launched a beta version for Android.
“Today we are delighted to share that Clubhouse for Android will immediately begin rolling out in beta,” the team said in a blog post. But unfortunately, the beta rollout is only available in the US at this time.
“We will start gradually, with the United States today, followed by other English-speaking countries and then the rest of the world,” said the Clubhouse team. The company suggests it will collect feedback, issue fixes, and work on a few new features “over the next few weeks” ahead of a larger release. So this should give you a rough idea of when to expect Clubhouse in more countries.
It’s not even completely free in the US, as you still have to sign up on a waitlist or receive an invitation from a friend to use the service. But whether you’re in the US or downloading the app through APKMirror, you can sign up and reserve your username right now. And the Android app does indeed work outside of the US if you get an invite from an iOS friend.
The developers of the Clubhouse report, however, that several features are missing in the Android version. These missing features include topic tracking, linking Instagram / Twitter accounts, creating / managing clubs, updating name / username in the app, etc.
News of Android’s availability also comes as a ton of major services adopt or plan to implement similar audio-only services, such as Twitter, Telegram and Facebook. Do you think Clubhouse is too late for Android? You can vote in our poll further up the page or check out the Play Store list below.
