IBC 2023 is coming to an end and it is time to take a step back and announce the winners of the CineD IBC 2023 awards: Blackmagic Design for its Blackmagic Camera application, Sony for its Sony BURANO CineAlta cinema camera, ARRI for the ARRI SkyPanel X and LC. -Tec for its liquid crystal filter technology. Let’s take a closer look at the winners.
The start of September was unusually busy in terms of camera releases, which significantly increased interest in IBC 2023 in Amsterdam. This is also the first sold-out IBC since 2019 (in terms of exhibit space – last year’s IBC was about half the size), and it appears conventions are back to normal after Covid.
We still have many videos and articles to finish and publish over the next few weeks, but it’s definitely time to take a step back and recognize the most notable products we saw at this year’s show. It’s never an easy process and we realize we may be missing some products, but here are the four most impressive products we saw at the show – those are the CineD IBC 2023 Best-of-Show Awards:
Best Software Innovation – Blackmagic Camera iPhone App
In addition to announcing a new cinema camera, Blackmagic Design surprised everyone by announcing an iOS camera app that allows full control of the iPhone’s capabilities in terms of camera settings. (On the new iPhone 15 Pro, the new camera LOG mode is also accessible.) The app is free and remarkably stable and responsive and seems very feature-rich for a v1 version, and for iPhones as far back as the iPhone SE. are supported. Plus, Blackmagic Cloud support and the addition of timecode to files, meaning a remote desktop running DaVinci Resolve can immediately pull in filmed files from iPhones in the field and sync the files. clips without additional work. An incredibly smart and useful integration of cloud technology for citizen shooters or journalists covering live events with their phone. We’re expecting a lot of quality content produced using the new Blackmagic Camera app, especially in combination with its Blackmagic Cloud integration, and so we’re awarding it our CineD IBC 2023 Best-of-Show award for best software innovation.

Best Lighting Innovation – ARRI SkyPanel
It’s been a while since ARRI introduced the original SkyPanel (it was 2015, which feels like a century in the lighting tech industry), and in 2023 they finally released a new version. ARRI is “all about color” and they are proud to have the best color engine in the new version of the SkyPanel. What stands out most to us about the SkyPanel An S60 adapter allows you to use older accessories from the original SkyPanel, such as the broadcast dome. The SkyPanel X is IP66 rated, making it weather resistant. The light can be combined with additional fixtures to create a larger source. For ARRI standards, the SkyPanel We award the ARRI SkyPanel X our CineD Best-of-Show award for best lighting innovation.

Best Camera Innovation – Sony BURANO CineAlta Cinema Camera
Sony BURANO is the new CineAlta camera positioned below the VENICE 2 (read our coverage here), and it features some innovations we haven’t seen in any other cinema camera – or any of them camera, by the way – before: the combination of in-body stabilization (IBIS) and in-built ND is entirely new and has never been done before due to the mechanical limitations of placing a moving sensor behind a removable filter. Sony has fixed this issue somehow and it’s a sign of things to come in their smaller camera models as well, hopefully also in the Alpha series, which still haven’t seen from integrated ND filters. Second, this is also the first PL mount camera with built-in ND. We award the Sony BURANO our CineD Best-of-Show award for best camera innovation.

Most Innovative Technology – LC-Tec Electronic ND Filter and Diffusion Technology
Variable electronic ND filters are an incredibly useful technology when shooting in changing lighting conditions, and shooters who have used them once (often built into Sony cameras) will begin to miss them immediately when they upgrade to another camera. To our knowledge, only two companies have similar technology: Sony and LC-Tec. LC-Tec’s technical approach is different from Sony’s, but the effect is the same: ND strength (and alternatively diffusion) can be continuously adjusted. What’s great about LC-Tec is that they aim to make their technology camera independent, more specifically, they are currently looking for a partner to produce drop-in filters with variable ND and variable diffusion technology. The possibilities are endless here and we look forward to this technology finding its way into many more cameras and filters. We award LC-Tec our CineD Best-of-Show award for most innovative technology.
