Chloe Bailey, Woody Harrelson and Olivia Colman lend their talents to a new arena – the Bob Dylan songbook. According to Variety, the trio is starring in a film adaptation of “Girl From the North Country,” a Broadway musical featuring iconic Dylan songs like “All Along the Watchtower” and “Make You Feel My Love.”
The screen adaptation will be produced by Blueprint Pictures, the production company behind “The Banshees of Inisherin,” and will be written and directed by Conor McPherson, who also wrote the musical. Dylan himself also gave McPherson and the show his blessing. “Being associated with Conor is one of the highlights of my professional life,” he said in a statement, per Variety. “It goes without saying that the man is a genius at putting this thing together and I’m thrilled to be a part of the experience. My songs couldn’t be in better hands. The piece brought me to tears at the end. I can’t even say why. When the curtain fell, I was stunned. I really was.
It’s shaping up to be a big year for the film’s three stars. Bailey is gearing up to release her debut album as a solo artist and is also set to star in Donald Glover’s new TV project, “Swarm,” which is the successor to “Atlanta.” Harrelson’s film “Triangle of Sadness” is nominated for three awards at this year’s Oscars, including Best Picture. Meanwhile, Colman’s film “Empire of Light” is also nominated for an Oscar, and she’s set to appear in Marvel and Disney+’s “Secret Invasion.”
Representatives for Blueprint did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR’s request for comment, and the project does not yet have a release date. Ahead, learn more about the screen adaptation of “Girl From the North Country.”
Plot “Girl from the North Country”
“Girl From the North Country” weaves together a list of Dylan songs to tell the story of several Midwesterners living during the Great Depression era. It is set in a guesthouse in Duluth, MN, and centers on innkeeper Nick Laine, his wife, Elizabeth – who is in the early stages of dementia – and their secret adopted daughter, Marianne, who develops a relationship with an escaped convict named Joe Scott. All of the characters are at a crossroads in their lives, and their stories come to life through Dylan’s songs, including “Forever Young”, “Hurricane”, “Slow Train Coming” and “Like a Rolling Stone”.
Cast of “Girl from the North Country”
Harrelson will play Nick, who runs the guesthouse at the heart of the story. Colman will play his wife, Elizabeth, while Bailey will play their adopted daughter, Marianne. “Doctor Who” star Tosin Cole will play Joe.
