Beijing, China: In an effort to diversify its business, Huawei Technologies of China, the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker, has announced plans to develop self-driving car technology by 2025.
“Our team’s goal is to achieve a truly autonomous car by 2025,” said Wang Jun, a Huawei executive quoted by Reuters.
Industry insiders believe the global smartphone industry is considering alternative business models after Huawei received U.S. sanctions in 2019.
Around this time, the Trump administration ended the use of U.S. processor chips and other technologies needed to make smartphones by Huawei.
In 2020, the United States continued to tighten regulations and viewed Huawei as a threat to U.S. national security.
As quoted by the Associated Press, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei said, “You can survive without resorting to telemarketing. “
He added that strong sales of network equipment and other technologies could help compensate for weaknesses in the business of mobile operators.
