China Unicom Beijing and Huawei First to Market 64T64R MetaAAU for Better Deep Coverage in Residential Areas – Huawei

[Beijing, China, August 17, 2022] China Unicom Beijing led the commercialization of Huawei’s all-new 64T64R MetaAAU in a pilot urban residential area in Tongzhou district, home to a large number of 5G users who have huge demand for 5G services. The deployment of 64T64R MetaAAU resulted in a significant increase in the rates perceived by users. Even in a building close to the edge of the cell, the downlink user perceived throughput could reach 100 Mbps on each floor. This game-changing technology transcends long-standing challenges in deep residential coverage to further expand high-quality, ubiquitous 5G gigabit networks.

Testing MetaAAU Uplink and Downlink Rates in Beijing’s Tall Buildings

64T64R MetaAAU is an upgrade of Huawei MetaAAU series which adopts Extremely Wide Antenna Array (ELAA) technology for optimal performance and power efficiency. The number of channels has been increased from 32T32R to 64T64R, which means this brand new green 5G Massive MIMO base station can provide solid coverage, high capacity and outstanding experience.

Since the commercialization of 5G, China Unicom Beijing has built 5G gigabit networks in urban areas for continuous coverage by deploying Massive MIMO products based on the wide bandwidth of 3.5 GHz. In the first half of this year, China Unicom Beijing also extended 5G gigabit networks to several villages. However, the limited coverage of the uplink and the small coverage radius of the mid- and high-bands pose challenges for network construction in scenarios requiring high coverage, such as densely populated urban areas. MetaAAU increases coverage and is the ideal option for China Unicom Beijing to deliver enhanced coverage and gigabit 5G experience both indoors and outdoors through wall-penetrating signals.

Fan Liqun, Head of 5G Co-Building and Sharing Team, China Unicom Beijing, said, “In the first half of this year, we deployed MetaAAU 32T32Rs to more than 1,000 sites to consolidate our digital village strategy. This time, we deployed Huawei brand-new MetaAAU 64T64R in a residential area, and we were amazed with its live network performance. We look forward to rolling out this product widely in the future to provide our users with a better 5G experience in more scenarios.

“Since the launch of MetaAAU, we have worked with China Unicom Beijing to market it in different scenarios on the live network.” said Ritchie Peng, president of Huawei 5G product line. “I am delighted to see the excellent performance of MetaAAU on the live network in residential areas. We will continue to work with China Unicom Beijing to test this product in more scenarios and fully unleash the power of Massive MIMO for operators.
