Huawei’s 16,999 yuan (US $ 2,450) foldable Mate Xs went on sale in China on Thursday morning and were immediately sold on multiple e-commerce platforms. Huawei declined to disclose the number of units available for purchase, but nearly half a million people signed up on Huawei’s JD.com and Vmall to be notified of the phone one day after the end of the pre-registration last week.
On Thursday afternoon, used Mate X phones were already appearing on sites such as Xianyu d’Alibaba, a platform for the exchange of used goods. The devices sold for up to 2.5 times the original price. To convince customers that they actually have the phone, some suppliers have even posted screenshots of their order receipts.
Samsung’s rival device – the Galaxy Z Flip – has already sold twice in China in two rounds of sales that started a week ago. It costs 5,000 yuan (US $ 720) less than the Huawei Mate Xs.
