China leads the world with 1.59 million patents in 2021, US second because Huawei played major role – Reuters

Huawei’s patents are becoming a huge reason for China’s growing progress in the patent world. In the latest edition, China ranked first in the growth rate of patent applications worldwide in 2021, and great credit for this achievement goes to Huawei.

Recently, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a report on the global growth of intellectual patent applications in 2021.

Finally, the report highlights good global patent scores. To date, 3.4 million patents have been filed worldwide. Compared to the year 2020, the global patent growth rate increased by 3.6%.

But the interesting part is China’s ranking. The information reveals that China has 1.59 million patent applications, the highest number in the global patent list. Additionally, the region has achieved tremendous success in all categories of IP.

For example: patents, trademarks, industrial designs and plant varieties. The report also counts valid patents worldwide. Here too, China comes out with flying colors and has 3.6 million authorized patents.

This is much more than that of the United States, which totals 590,000 patents. Subsequently, the list of patent growth rates indicates the following countries:

  • China – 1.59 million patents
  • United States – 591,473 patents
  • Japan – 289,200 patents
  • Republic of Korea – 237,998 patents
  • European Patent Office – 188,778 patents

Although the list includes 10 countries, these top five countries have supported and built Asian infrastructure in a much better way. Ultimately, the regions mentioned have also brought about an evolution in commercial and industrial layout concepts.

Huawei – the main reason for China’s success!

While China stamped its name in the first position, Huawei also exceeded the number of PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) patent applications in the following 5 years. The company has over 110,000 authorized patents and over 60,000 PCT patents.

Even after the COVID-19 pandemic and US restrictions, Huawei is consistently reaching new heights. It was Huawei and its patent applications that enabled China to overtake the United States region with a huge score in the 2021 Global Patent Growth Report.

In addition, Huawei Patents has also served in the cellular sector. From innovative mechanisms to new functions, the company has issued various patents and imposed them on its devices.

Currently, around 2 billion handsets use Huawei’s 4G and 5G patents. In addition, 8 million smart vehicles equipped with Huawei’s patents and operating systems are exported every year. Huawei’s Chief Legal Officer – Song Liuping expressed his thoughts:

“Over the past three years, Huawei has faced a difficult external environment, and the more difficult the period, the more it will test Huawei’s resolve to invest in the future.”

Patent growth will continue

WIPO Director General Daren Tang said patent filing will also continue to grow in the future. The latest results showed that users and manufacturers around the world will continue to innovate and create new products despite pandemic scenarios.
