In the 56-game 2021 season, the Blackhawks and Red Wings have faced each other eight times, starting with Friday’s game at United Center. Ahead of the Chicago home opener, we take a look back at a collection of memorable moments from the Original Six rivalry.
The Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings compiled a total of 308 penalty minutes in a game on Dec. 23, 1988. He ranks 11th in NHL history for most penalty minutes.
Bob McGill, who was playing for the Blackhawks at the time, recorded 20 of those minutes. He got a 10-minute foul in the second period, fought Kris King early in the third period, then fought Bob Probert at the end of the third period. It would appear to be a memorable game for McGill or anyone involved in it.
