‘Chelsea will regret this decision’ – Graeme Souness thinks Todd Boehly made huge mistake in sacking Thomas Tuchel

Graeme Souness has told Chelsea he will regret sacking Thomas Tuchel as manager.

Tuchel was sacked by new Blues owner Todd Boehly last week following a Champions League loss to Dinamo Zagreb.

However, it is understood that the decision to fire the German was taken before this match following a relationship breakdown between him and Boehly.

Graham Potter was quickly brought in from Brighton to replace him, but former Liverpool and Rangers boss Souness believes it was the wrong decision.

He told talkSPORT: “I liked him. When a new owner comes in you are vulnerable as a manager. He will have his own ideas.

“With the new group that arrived, not having a footballing background meant they were on dangerous ground.

“Petr Cech is leaving, Bruce Buck is leaving and Marina Granovskaia is leaving, I think it was not a good sign for Chelsea fans.

“They spent a lot of money willy-nilly, that’s what [former manager] Bob Paisley used to tell us when people weren’t really sure.

“They got rid of the wrong man. I would have kept it.

“I don’t believe the stories coming out of Chelsea are anywhere near complete. I think Chelsea PR did a number on Tuchel to paint the new owners in a good light.

“I’m not sorry for Tuchel because at the end of the day he’s a big boy and he took a job at a big football club. The pressure is there from day one.

“I think they will regret this decision.”

Souness also confirmed he had heard similar stories from Stamford Bridge to those Rio Ferdinand told on his YouTube channel.

The Manchester United legend claimed he was told Boehly was too involved in the tactical and technical side of things, which are normally left to the manager.

Souness added: “The world of football is a very small place, so you hear stories that the man in the street doesn’t hear.

“What Rio Ferdinand alluded to would also be my feelings. I spoke to someone, he said more or less the same things.

“Boehly knows football now and he makes decisions that are not for me.”
