We have the return of the Champions League, with the first matches of the round of 16.
When looking at the Champions League soccer odds on FanDuel Sportsbook, which bets make the most sense for this game day?
Betting on the Champions League: 02/13/24
Manchester City at FC Copenhagen (3 p.m. ET)
Manchester City -1.5 goals (-130)
We start with the biggest gap of the round of 16. Defending champions Manchester City begin their knockout phase against FC Copenhagen, who reach this round for only the second time in their history.
Copenhagen are third in the Danish Superliga this season, ranked as the 14th best league in the UEFA rankings. They qualified from a group including Bayern Munich and Manchester United, but had a negative expected goal difference (xG), according to FBref.com.
Manchester City have won their last eight matches in all competitions, five of which were by more than one goal. They dominated their group, winning all six matches and having an xG differential of +17.3. They are second in the English Premier League table and are the favorites to win it again.
It’s hard to see Copenhagen rivaling Man City in this match. They played Bayern very closely in both their meetings, but lost the home game 2-1. With City fully healthy, they should have the ability to win by multiple goals. They also have an incentive to score a lot of goals, as a substantial lead going into the second leg would give them a big advantage.
The price of -130 is not too high to rely on an overall favorite of -470, so I would feel good betting on this one.
Real Madrid at RB Leipzig (3 p.m. ET)
Real Madrid moneyline (+120)
The second game on Tuesday is a little closer than the first. It features two teams going in opposite directions in their respective leagues.
Real Madrid scored a huge victory in La Liga on Saturday. They comprehensively beat second-placed Girona 4-0 and won the xG battle 3.2 to 0.3. In total, Madrid have only managed to win six times this season in all competitions, including three against city rivals Atletico Madrid.
RB Leipzig hasn’t played well since the winter break. They have won just one of their five matches against lowly Union Berlin. They currently occupy fifth place in the Bundesliga.
It is regrettable for Real Madrid to be without Jude Bellingham, who injured his ankle during the match against Girona. He is currently one of the best players in the world. It appears that Brahim Diaz will start at his position, and he is a very talented offensive player who can do a modest job filling that role.
Even without Bellingham, I still believe Madrid can go to Germany and get a victory against a struggling team. They have a lot of experience in this competition and have the talent all over the court to win this game.
Getting +120 is a great price here, even on the road.
Vinicius Junior scores or assists (-115): A young star who already has a huge history in this competition, Vinicius Junior should be able to contribute to a goal.
Vini is averaging 0.91 goals per 90 minutes in La Liga this season, the best of his career. RB Leipzig have conceded 11 goals in five matches in 2024. Vinicius’ dynamic talent will be difficult for them to deal with, and I don’t think they will be able to contain him.
Jeremy Doku to assist (+230): Somewhat forgotten by Manchester City with Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden all grabbing the headlines of late, Doku should not be ignored.
He has made five assists in 975 Premier League minutes this season. He hasn’t contributed to a goal in a while but has 0.8 expected assists in his last four matches. One of them should eventually turn into an assist. It wouldn’t be a surprise if that happened in this match against Copenhagen in which we expect Man City to be on top.
