Vincent Norrman and Nacho Elvira split the lead by seven under after the first round of the Cazoo Open backed by Gareth Bale at Celtic Manor.
Sweden’s Norrman managed seven birdies in a 64 without a bogey, with Spaniard Elvira equaling that score in sunny South Wales despite a double bogey at 16.
England’s James Morrison is second on five under alongside Mikko Korhonen.
England’s Ryder Cup prospect Matt Wallace, the top-ranked player in the field, is in a four-under group.
Former Ryder Cup player Nicolas Colsaerts and England’s Robert Rock are also among those on the bottom line, along with Aaron Rai and Justin Harding – both of whom finished in the top 20 at last week’s Open – and American John Catlin in a dime group.
Fellow Archie Davies, 20, was the best Welsh player as he landed the final birdie for a two-under 69 round.
