Former Reds defender barely got to take part in the celebration due to his generous nature
Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has revealed that he spent most of the party following his side’s 2005 Champions League victory transporting fans to the celebration in an elevator.
Liverpool memorable came back from three goals against AC Milan in Istanbul, winning the European title after a penalty shootout.
Carragher said so many fans crushed the celebration on his team’s rooftop, he spent most of the night getting them to the party.
What was said?
“The celebrations were amazing, but I spent most of the night getting on and off in an elevator!” Carragher said FourFourTwo.
“Our party was on this rooftop, and I was getting messages to go to reception to let my family in. Then we heard that if you said, ‘I’m Jamie Carragher’s cousin,’ you would go into partying. I let in loads of fans, but I didn’t mind – it meant they had photos with the trophy.
Champions League victory kept Gerrard from joining Chelsea
Carragher also revealed that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could have joined Chelsea without Liverpool’s incredible return to Istanbul.
“Winning the Champions League in 2005 kept him at the club because it showed we can compete at the highest level,” Carragher said of Gerrard. “It also meant that we qualified for the Champions League next season, as we would. Fifth in the league, it’s hard to believe, but without his goal the story could have been very different.
“Stevie was 24 and belonged to the Champions League – he was the best attacking midfielder in the world. Chelsea were desperate for him, but that goal changed everything.
