Carolyn Hax: Is it rude for a wealthy couple to ask for wedding gifts they can buy themselves?

Is it nice when a flush couple sets a charitable tone with their register? Sure. I imagine. May be. You see, it is also fraught with possibilities of misinterpretation: “We are so rich that we don’t need your stuff!” If you had to stick with it, I would recommend (for any couple, really) to offer a relatively modest little ledger out of courtesy for those wanting gift advice, as well as getting the word out discreetly through surrogates – members of the wedding party, immediate families – as gifts on behalf of the couple to a preferred charity would be welcome. It is still needle-spinning, and there are countless opinions, traditions, sensitivities, causes, cultures and grievances, all competing to get through the eye.
