The official Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies trailer features terrifying demons and otherworldly weapons to a bizarre song by Billie Eilish.
Over the past decade, Zombies mode has become a staple of the Call of Duty franchise, allowing four players to face waves of the living dead in a test of skill and teamwork. Previous games have allowed players to battle zombies on increasingly overblown battlefields, from the ruins of WWII Germany to a moon base. Now the official trailer for Call of Duty: The Vanguard Zombies suggests that the new title’s Zombies mode may be bigger and more hilarious than ever, with the trailer’s choice of soundtrack – the simple yet fun and unsettling Billie Eilish’s “Bury a Friend” – faking it. adapt well enough to his tone.
The reveal trailer isn’t the only teaser fans have received for Call of Duty: The Vanguard Zombies. Previous videos have shown scenes of zombies rising from the dead, hordes of walking corpses seemingly coming straight out of hell, and a multi-armed figure emerging from the flames to the singing sounds of “Bury a Friend”, all during that a Nazi officer smiled madly. In the reveal trailer, his name was confirmed to be Oberfuhrer Wolfram von List, and it looks like he’s responsible for this iteration of Zombies mode.
Apparently, List’s plan is to contact a vengeful supernatural presence and raise an army of the dead in the Mortal Realm, but it appears his supernatural ally is more concerned with his own revenge. This leaves room for players, who appear to be a small international team of then-adapted soldiers in true zombie lore, to forge their own alliances with other, hopefully less evil supernatural entities. Either way, it’s clear that players will face off against possessed corpses and demons in Call of Duty: The Vanguard Zombies as well as more standard varieties of undead.
In the trailer, players are shown in contact with these entities and using their strength, which appears to take the form of an arsenal of supernatural weapons and new “Dark Aether” skills. One of these magical weapons seems to conjure storms of flying icicles and gradually freeze enemies, while a second seems to cause some sort of magical grenade effect and a third summons a floating red obelisk. While it’s unclear what role “Bury a Friend” will play in the end game, the song’s lyrics may be quite appropriate for a game aimed at putting the restless dead back into the ground.
At the time of writing, it appears that Call of Duty fans are excited about the Call of Duty: The Vanguard Zombie news. Several users left comments below the original video, indicating that the mode looked refreshing, disgusting, and generally amazing. One group of fans discussed their hopes for Zombies to become their own series in the future, while a second playfully compared the trailer to Eternal destiny.
Call of Duty: The Vanguard is slated for release on November 5 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X / S.
