The State of California has launched a tool designed to give residents easy access to a digital copy of their COVID-19 vaccine information. Unlike the New York Excelsior Pass, it’s not an app that people have to install on their phones. This is a simple website where residents will be required to enter their name, date of birth, and the phone number or email address they used when they received their vaccine. They also need to create a 4-digit PIN code, which they will need to remember in order to open the digital copy of their immunization record.
In addition to a link with their information, users will also receive a QR code that makes their file readable with a QR scanner. They can use it to enter establishments or events that require clients or attendees to have been vaccinated beforehand. While digital records are convenient, the California Department of Public Health “recommends that vaccinated Californians keep their CDC paper cards in a safe and secure place.” Their digital COVID-19 vaccine record is meant to be a handy backup that they can take with them wherever they go.
The state government said the tool was designed in accordance with “national security and privacy standards” because it will have access to people’s sensitive information. Having said that, it may not work perfectly right now. One of Engadget of editors in California signed up and found her information on the digital version of her dossier to be incorrect. The initiative may suffer from deployment issues that affect the state database.
