NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Powerful singer Caitlyn Smith spent much of the past two years thinking. Coming out of her second album on Monument Records, released almost the day the world shut down in 2020, she was at a crossroads – staying in the familiar or pushing into the unknown. She chose the latter and embarked on a journey that would lead her to a new sound and a new album. A self-produced album by Smith, writing over every song, listening to every guitar chord and perfecting every percussion.
The first glimpse of the project is the new track “High,” available today via Monument Records. The arena-ready anthem features the unparalleled vocal production of Smith and Amanda Shires on fiddle. Listen now. Watch the official video HERE.
“Self-production taught me a lot about trusting my own compass,” Smith shares. “In the past, I’ve been guilty of seeking direction from everyone. That’s why I decided to choose my own adventure. It was a beautifully terrifying experience and added a layer of vulnerability when you’re also responsible for painting the soundscape as an artist, in addition to writing and singing the songs.
The track premiered exclusively on BBC Radio 2’s ‘The Country Show with Bob Harris’ yesterday, with Harris raving, “It’s big and it’s dramatic and it’s absolutely fantastic. I love this record.” Written by Smith with Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Erin Decilveo, “High” was originally released by Cyrus on her album plastic hearts. Smith now shares her take on the track which also finds her taking on the producer role for the first time in her career.
The rising track finds the singer mourning that lost love that you can’t seem to shake, especially when you’ve smoked or drunk too much, with her singing:
And in my head, I tried my best to say goodbye
And I don’t miss you, but I think of you and I don’t know why
I still feel high
I still feel high

When the Minnesota native arrived in Music City, she found herself in the writers’ rooms of Music Row, marveling at the simplicity and purity of their songs to begin with: just vocals and guitar or piano. She took that wonder and established herself as a creative force in Music City, writing songs for Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, Meghan Trainor and John Legend and releasing her own critically acclaimed albums, 2018. star fire and 2020s Supernova. By self-producing her next project, she is planting her roots in country music, ready to share the most honest and vulnerable version of herself. Stay tuned for release details.
